A resume and cover letter go hand in hand in all proper business activities. Each of them is designed for a particular purpose, but they are intended to act as a team. The cover letter is an introduction to your resume which in turn is a separate sales page about that most important quantity -- you! So how do you go about composing an effective cover letter? Let's examine the basic structure of this paper.
A good cover letter doesn't have to be fancy, but should include some significant points and can be tailored to the specific job that you are applying for at this time. It is typically three paragraphs long with an address header and closing salutation. Make sure that you follow this time tested format in order to shine the spotlight on your submission.
When addressing the cover letter, try to find out who is taking the applications. A first and last name, along with the reviewers title will look great at the top of the page. Make sure to get the proper street address of the company along with the city and state. This shows that you have done your homework.
In the first paragraph, indicate how you found the advertisement and why you are interested in the position. Think about a unique way to tie in your background to the open slot. This will help to pique the reviewers attention.
Next, include at least one of your best achievements that will directly fill a need in the company. Don't include a list here as your resume if following to fill that void. The key here is to grab the readers eyeballs and glue them to your page instead of the competition.
Close by thanking the reader for his/her time. Indicate that you will follow up by phone/fax/email at a certain time and date. Then make sure to do so. Empty promises will only get you another rejection. Be thought of as one who follows through on things. Dependability is a great trait.
Finish up your cover letter with an appropriate salutation and type your name leaving space between these two to sign in ink (blue or black). You now have a cover letter worthy of your greatness.
Good luck!
